How much is a rare bee worth? - Marginal REVOLUTION
Plans by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta to build an AI data centre in the US that runs on nuclear power were thwarted in part because a rare species of bee was discovered on land earmarked for the project, according to people familiar with the matter. Zuckerberg had planned to strike a deal with an existing nuclear […]

twttr sketch | On May 31st, 2000, I signed up with a new ser… | Flickr
On May 31st, 2000, I signed up with a new service called LiveJournal. I was user 4,136 which entitled me a permanent account and street cred in some alternate geeky universe which I have not yet visited. I was living in the Sunshine Biscuit Factory in Oakland California and starting a company to dispatch couriers, taxis, and emergency services from the web. One night in July of that year I had an idea to make a more "live" LiveJournal. Real-time, up-to-date, from the road. Akin to updating your AIM status from wherever you are, and sharing it. For the next 5 years, I thought about this concept and tried to silently introduce it into my various projects. It slipped into my dispatch work. It slipped into my networks of medical devices. It slipped into an idea for a frictionless service market. It was everywhere I looked: a wonderful abstraction which was easy to implement and understand. The 6th year; the idea has finally solidified (thanks to the massively creative environment my employer Odeo provides) and taken a novel form. We're calling it twttr (though this original rendering calls it stat.us; I love the word.ed domains, e.g. gu.st/). It's evolved a lot in the past few months. From an excited discussion and persuasion on the South Park playground to a recently approved application for a SMS shortcode. I'm happy this idea has taken root; I hope it thrives. Some things are worth the wait.
Four interns are brought into Fog Creek Software’s Manhattan office and given 12 weeks to design, develop, debug and ship a computer program that will, among other things, help millions of frustrated users fix their relatives computers via the internet.
Boondoggle Films presents a journey through the world of software development from the perspective of a unique software startup, four quirky interns, and the world of the geek.

Here we go with another look at a Japan exclusive machine - this time, the FM Towns.
The FM Towns was a "personal computer" (not a game console) - produced by Fujitsu, starting in 1989. Similar to the Sharp x68000, it was very powerful and expensive when compared to the consoles at the time.
The hardware was based on Intel's 386 processor's making it very similar to standard IBM PC builds at the time. It had a standard CD-ROM, being one of the first platforms to natively embrace the new growing trend of "multimedia"
In 1993, Fujitsu released the FM-Towns Marty - which was essentially, a console version of the platform; no keyboard and monitor, but meant to be played with gamepads and plugged into a TV. It was. however, backward compatible with the existing FM Towns library.
As a gaming platform, it drew lots of attention from developers who produced many RPGs/Visual Novels/Adventures - much of which was adult-themed erotic gaming ("eroge"). As a matter of fact, a significant amount of the platform's library is indeed "eroge".
Aside from these RPGs/Visual Novels/adventures, the platform played host to mostly ports from other systems. There were quite a few very impressive ports of arcade hits; but more interestingly, due to the platform's similarity to a standard IBM PC, many MS-DOS ports appeared; often in improved form! For example, Lucasart's classic "Zak McKracken" was originally released only in 16-color EGA on MS-DOS. The FM-Towns version supported full 256 color graphics and enhanced sound effects!
Note that wherever possible, I've tried to specify the developer of each title; if not possible, I've listed the publisher instead.

As you become an adult, you realize that things around you weren't just always there; people made them happen. But only recently have I started to internalize how much tenacity *everything* requires. That hotel, that park, that railway. The world is a museum of passion projects.
